Pet Compounding And Medications

Pharmacist Compounding Medicine - Westfield, NJ - Tiffany Natural Pharmacy

We love our pets, and when they are sick or in pain, we want to help. Sometimes, a pharmaceutical solution isn't readily available, or sometimes our pet won't cooperate with us when we try to administer their medication. At Tiffany Natural Pharmacy, we work hand in hand with your veterinarian using pet compounding to create safe and simple solutions for your pet's needs.

What Is Pet Compounding?

Pet compounding covers an array of adjustments that can be made to your pet's medications, including:

  • Using crushed tablets or injectables to create an oral suspension
  • Adding flavor to medications
  • Using tablets or injectables to create a skin-penetrating gel
  • Using tablets or injectables to create a solution that can be instilled into the ear
  • Combining extracted components of multiple medications

Solutions must be created from FDA-approved medications to be deemed legal for sale.

Why Use Pet Compounds Instead Of Regular Medications?

The most common reason a veterinarian recommends a compounded medication is to provide your pet with a pharmaceutical solution when there’s not already an FDA-approved treatment that’s medically appropriate.

Pet compounds may also be necessary when it’s not possible to administer a medication in its original form. For example, if your pet refuses to swallow a pill, having the pharmacist compound the medication into a form that’s easier to administer or adding flavor to the medication may help you get your pet to take it.

Are Pet Compounds Legal, And How Are They Regulated?

Pet compounds are regulated under the Animal Medicinal Drug Use Clarification Act of 1994, specifically under a subsection of this act entitled Extralabel Drug Use Rules. The FDA also regulates all pharmaceutical compounding under its Compliance Policy Guide. A private nonprofit organization called the United States Pharmacopeial Convention establishes quality standards for pharmaceutical compounding, including pet compounding.
